The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Defense Department organization that helps both employers and employees understand the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). The ESGR role is to inform and educate as a free resource to employers and service members, it does not enforce USERRA (the Labor Department handles enforcement). Visit the ESGR website for a full list of services including plain language of what USERRA means.
Among its educational activities, the ESGR sponsors “Boss Lifts” to help us understand what our employees go through when activated and deployed by the Guard or Reserve. An invitation to participate in a Boss Lift is how I found out what ESGR is, and the resources available. A group of us were flow to Pope AFB by the 128th Refueling Wing (Wisconsin Air National Guard), hosted by the 440th Airlift Wing (an Air Force Reserve Unit), and given a tour of Fort Bragg by the 82nd Airbourne. Activities included inflight refueling of Wisconsin Air National Guard F15s and a tour of the Fort Bragg HEAT simulator facility with hands on training simulations. (Pictures will follow in a later post). The trip was a real eye opening experience, if you are invited to a Boss Lift it is worth the time and effort!
